trying finish up repairs in shop, before packing up and closing it down. I have a Gibson C-1 Classical in. I glued the bridge back on (thanks Paul w for great cam clamps, much better than anything ever used on classical)The owner says needs neckset. I have looked at it and go back and forth, but leaning toward it could use it. It was made in early 60's according to him and he bought it in 63. I have been to Gibson site, but cannot find any information on their classical except to newer "Chet Atkins" models. Never worked on a Gibson classical for this type of repair, so not know anything about necks,or very little. I am thinking may have done dovetail for original set, but then may have done the slots in neck block. I don't want to just jump in and start trying to make straighter on neck jig or taking neck off without knowing what may be dealing with. If like acoustics no problem. Fact is, this is only 2nd Gibson ever had for anything other than setups, nut, saddles,fretwork, and just basic anybody can do stuff. If to much, may just keep the strings on it and let him take it somewhere else, but sure could use the money. |

Stan, I haven't had the neck off of one of these, so I'm not sure of the construction. If by some slim chance it were Spanish construction with an integral heel/foot, you'd either make a new fingerboard and taper it to adjust the neckset, or separate the back from the foot and "slip" it then reglue with new angle, or you can heat press it if it is just a bow. How much fingerboard is on there? how high is the action? |

I own two Gibson C1 Classicals. Looking at the neck block, I am certain that it is a dovetail joint. It definitely isn't a spanish foot. Gibson was and still is a steel string builder that built some classicals to compete in the 1960's. I am sure that they would have done what they knew best: dovetail neck joints. If it were me, I would pull the 13th fret and drill for the steam needle. Then I would run a string down in the hole to confirm that there is a gap and thus a dovetail joint. |
